# Birthdays

The Birthdays feature lets you manage date-of-birth information for contacts while respecting privacy preferences. Some people in your organisation may not wish to share their full birth date — infoodle allows you to hide the birth year while preserving the month and day for birthday reminders and age calculations.

When a birth year is hidden, the contact won't appear in reports that use age criteria, and their age is treated as 21 years old for system purposes.

## What Happens When a Year is Hidden
* **Birthday visibility** - The month and day still appear on birthday lists, allowing the system to remind you of upcoming birthdays
* **Age calculations** - The system treats the contact's birth year as 1902 internally. This means:
    * They won't appear in age-based report filters (e.g., "people aged under 18" or "between 40 and 50")
    * Their age is classified as an adult for any age-related functions
* **Reports** - Any report that uses an age criterion will exclude contacts with hidden birth years
* **Data retrieval** - Once hidden, the birth year cannot be recovered. The action is permanent

## Showing the Birth Year Again
If you need to restore a birth year that was hidden:
1. Open the contact's **Profile page**
2. Click on the **Dates** tab
3. Click the **Edit** button
3. Click **Show Year**

5. You'll be prompted to enter or re-enter the full date of birth (month, day, and year)
6. Click **Save**

:::(Info) (Tips)
* **Reversible decision** - Hiding the year is easy to undo. Just open the date field, click "Show Year", re-enter the full date, and save.
* **Month and day are preserved** - Hiding the year only removes the year value. The month and day are kept, so birthday reminders still work.
* **Affects reporting only** - Hiding the year doesn't hide the contact's birthday from birthday lists or reminders. It only prevents them from appearing in age-based report filters.
* **Different from archiving** - Hiding a birth year is not the same as archiving a contact. The contact remains fully active in the system.
